Unique and beautiful yarns, handpainted/ handspun in Scotland.

Lilith Green is the crafter behind Old Maiden Aunt and is one of the relatively few spinners based in Scotland skilled in the craft of handpainted and hand spun yarn.

“All yarn available for purchase in the Old Maiden Aunt shop has been either handpainted or handspun (and often both!) in Scotland. The mill-spun base yarn for my handpaints is as ethically sourced as possible, and is processed at mills local to where the fibre is produced - UK-breed wool is milled in the UK, and the exotic blends are milled at their source in South America, with a portion of the money going to the Mirasol Project. From my studio in West Kilbride the handspun yarn is spun by myself on a lovely majacraft little gem wheel, from ethically sourced fibres which are also hand-dyed by me!

For the most part, I dye my yarns either as single, one-off skeins, or in small batches of 2-3 skeins per colourway. If you see something you like it's best to snap it up - it might be the only one of its kind, and the colourway might not be repeated! I do keep a record of the dyeing process for most of the yarns, so if you're desperate for a colourway that is now sold out I may be able to reproduce it for you. If you're planning a larger project and need more yardage than is currently available in the online shop, please let me know what you need as I can usually custom dye larger batches of most yarns/colourways.

I'm now running dye-your-own workshop days at my wee studio in West Kilbride!!

Workshops cost £40 per person, with the format as follows:

4-5 hours split into two halves. In the first half of the workshop, you will get the chance to dye up some mini tester skeins of several different yarn bases (type of base available may depend on what I currently have in stock), which will give you a chance to experiment with several different fibres and colours, as well as trying out some different dyeing techniques. In the second half of the workshop, you will dye a full-sized skein of your choice of base yarn in the colourway of your choice.

The workshop charge includes tester skeins, full-sized skein, and dyeing tuition, plus tea/coffee & cakes! Extra skeins can also be dyed at an additional cost of £5 per extra skein.

Please note that my dyeing method is more "artistic" than "scientific" - I won't be giving you loads of technical information, but you'll get a fun day of trying different colours and yarns, and will get to take home a small project's worth of yarn in your own custom colourway.”
