Doors Open Day : Hunterston Castle

Craft Town Scotland is delighted to announce its participation in this years "Doors Open Day event at Hunterston Castle. The event offers the chance to explore some of Scotland"s most interesting buildings, ancient and modern - free of charge.

Working in partnership with Angus Cochran Patrick, whose family built the castle about the year 1200, plans are underway to stage a craft exhibition and accompanying basket weaving, ceramics, jewellery, millinery and wood carving demonstrations.

National Stage For Local Makers

West Kilbride Makers, Virgil Bauzys & Marion Kane, exhibited their work at the 2006 British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate last month.

A prestigious national event now celebrating its 25th year, the design led gift fair, which took place from 2nd to 4th April at the Great Yorkshire Showground, attracted thousands of buyers from the UK and Ireland and showcased about 450 makers.

In Praise of Develop Craft Ayrshire

Develop Craft Ayrshire was launched as a vehicle to bring craft to a wider audience whilst promoting craft education and improving opportunities for designer-makers to market and promote their work.

A three year project funded by North, South and East Ayrshire Councils, Argyll and the Islands Enterprise, The Scottish Arts Council and the European Regional Development Fund, it is due to end in its present form this summer.

Studio 30 Ritchie Street: Details

The studio offers workshop space suitable for one or two designer-makers to share. It comprises a front gallery/display area with shop front window, a kitchen and separate W.C. and workshop space and measures 814 sq feet. Monthly rental of £320 includes normal usage electricity (heating, lighting, etc), council & water rates and buildings insurance. (This is for full studio space, not per tenant - multiple occupancy will be priced proportionate to area used.)

Crafts Diversity Project Exhibition

The Gallery is hosting a touring exhibiton direct from St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art, Glasgow. West Kilbride Community Initiative Ltd invite you to come along and view the work created as a result of Textile artist Paula Ramdhan's collaboration with St Mungo Museum. Paula explored sectarianism with groups from across the city, using a variety of textiles and screen-printing techniques. This is a Scottish Arts Council- and Scottish-Executive funded project, managed by Glasgow Council (Museums). Thanks to Glasgow Restorative Justice Services, Royston Youth Action, Kelvinhaugh and St. Peters Primary Schools.

Sandy Campbell : Studio 30 Ritchie Street

Woodcarver Sandy Campbell was one of three wood craftsmen offered the opportunity to create an object carved from Renfrewshire"s famous Wallace Yew. The timber fell from the tree during a storm last January and Renfrewshire Council devised this project as part of the special William Wallace anniversary year.

Displayed at Paisley Museum as part of the Wallace Exhibition, the Tourist Information Centre in Paisley also had some of the smaller pieces for sale. Sandy leapt at the chance to work on the project, creating a limited number of plaques depicting the countenance of Wallace himself.

Candelabra: Studio 55 Main Street

Nicola Beattie, Candelabra wishes to announce a temporary change in her studio opening hours. As a result of unforseen circumstances, Candelabra (hand-made candles) will not be open for business Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. The studio will now open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 10am - 4.30 pm. Nic appreciates the support given since re-locating from Largs to West Kilbride and hopes to return to normal opening hours as soon as possible. For trade or private clients who wish to arrange an order, Nic"s contact details can be found on the menu bar "Craft Studios - Studio 55?. There will also be a selection of candles available from The Gallery (75/77 Main Street) during this period.

Welcome to this, the new website for Craft Town Scotland. On-line since mid-January 2006, we encourage your comments and suggestions in the lead-up to the site"s official launch on 3rd March.

The site is aimed at anyone interested in craft & design across all levels - the local community, visitors, the buying public, those involved in education, craft organisations and individual designer-makers (by no means an exhaustive list). Please register with us and receive the bi-monthly newsletter and also sign up to the discussion forum.
