Barony Exhibition Centre - Proposal Update

The Barony Restoration is intended to develop an existing community owned asset.

It is anticipated that the creation of a Centre of Excellence showcasing contemporary crafts will significantly enhance the current level of activity, creating a facility that will attract the critical mass of visitors required to maintain Craft Town Scotland as a financially sustainable social enterprise. It is believed that the development will increase income generation within 5 years, with a resultant reduction in the need for long-term grant aid.

We are delighted to announce the successful outcome of our bid to the Big Lottery "Investing In Ideas fund. The award will enable the commissioning of a feasibility study and full business plan for the development of a centre of excellence for the display of contemporary craft, which is seen as a significant element in ensuring the long-term future of Craft Town Scotland

Local Makers Showcase at Homes & Interiors Exhibition 2007

A group of makers from West Kilbride took part in the Homes & Interiors Exhibition at the SECC Glasgow on the 8th and 9th of September.

The Homes & Interiors Scotland Show is organised by the company that publish the "Homes & Interiors Scotland magazine, Scotland"s biggest selling home magazine. With over 13,000 visitors coming to see what is described as "the strongest roll-call of high quality interior and design companies brought together under one roof", the exhibition is now well established as Scotland"s quality interiors event.

Marion Kane Highly Commended in The Balvenie Artisan Awards 2007

Silversmith Marion E Kane, Studio 24 Ritchie Street, has once again achieved national recognition for her creative excellence and her determination to keep the old skills of her trade alive.

Country Living's The Balvenie Artisan Awards were launched to recognise those with a traditional skill at the heart of their business and, crucially, to reward those passing on these skills to a new generation. The Balvenie Artisan Awards 2007 are supported by Country Living and The Crafts Council.

The results were completely overwhelming, with a huge number of entries covering a multitude of crafts - from thatchers and blacksmiths to glass blowers and weavers

Celebrate Making It

We were delighted when Craft Town Scotland's application to the VisitScotland Challenge Fund was successful The VisitScotland Challenge Fund is a project part-financed by the European Union, designed to encourage innovative and collaborative marketing activity that attracts more visitors to Scotland.

As part of the promotional events programme, Craft Town Scotland is hosting an open day at West Kilbride Village Hall on Saturday 26th May from 1pm until 3.30pm.

Ayrshire Makers is a not for profit organisation set up by a voluntary group of professional craft makers. The group has come together to continue the work done by Develop Craft Ayrshire over six years up to July 2006.

The overarching aim of the Ayrshire Makers is to bring together artists, crafts people, designers etc. producing goods made solely in Ayrshire.

Susan Roberts, glass artist, has now joined the talented designer makers who operate from the studios in West Kilbride. She was awarded a regional and national Gold Medal in the creative glass category of the UK Skills Award for the glass mosaic panel shown, titled Indian Summer".

Working with stained and fused glass, Susan says this of her passion for her craft.

Marion"s work has been on show in the Victoria & Albert Museum London as part of the highly prestigious collection "Silver of the Stars, which pairs ten international celebrities in the fields of film, fashion, music, theatre and literature, with ten of Scotland's finest silversmiths. Each pair has collaborated on the design for a piece of silver on that most beautiful moment, "a drink with a close friend", resulting in a hugely varied collection of drinking vessels that ranges from absinthe goblets to teapots to claret jugs. "Silver of the Stars" is a registered charity that will benefit ten charities nominated by each of the celebrities.

West Kilbride Craft & Design Town, winners of Enterprising Britain 2006, a Department of Trade and Industry nationwide competition to find the most enterprising place in the UK, recently played host to the launch of this year"s drive for entrants in the Enterprising Britain 2007 award.
