Wed 8th October 2008
We are delighted to report that Gary Hamilton successfully completed the Run to the Beat half marathon in 2 hours last Sunday (5 October).
This is what Gary had to say
I got off to a bad start in the morning, my 25 minute journey to the 02 (formerly the Millennium Dome) took 3.5 hours due to a train being derailed on the Jubilee line. We came to a halt between Waterloo and Canada Water stations. When we eventually moved the train took us to Canada Water and not North Greenwich where we were headed. Hundreds of competitors got off at Canada Water walking aimlessly trying to get to the start.
"I then heard that the race had been delayed by 45 minutes due to the transport problems, some consolation. I eventually flagged down a taxi which took me to within a mile of the 02 which I ran to in order to drop my bag off and begin the race.
"The race had already started but a lot of runners were still queuing, luckily, to begin. I got there in the end it was such a relief to get started. The other problem on the day was the weather and it poured of rain throughout the race.
"Apart from that I had a fantastic time and by tomorrow should have raised my target of £1000 which will go directly to the Barony Restoration Fund.
"I would like to thank everyone who supported me with a special thanks to John MCallum and the Hydro Leisure Staff.
"Finally a huge thank you to Elizabeth McLardy, whose outstanding contribution to the local community was the incentive for me to take part in the run in the first place.
"I have now been bitten by the running bug and on my return from London have registered for The Paris Marathon on 5 April 2009... The full 26+ miles this time."
Gary latest fundraising update puts his total raised at £983.56 - an amazing achievement.
West Kilbride Community Initiative Ltd thank Gary for his drive and dedication to supporting the plans to develop the Barony Centre.
