National Play Day

National Play Day, on 3rd August, celebrated the importance of play. National Play Day is partly about giving children and families a great day out, but also aims to get across some serious messages about play and children. Supported by the Children's Play Council, Playday is a special annual day of local events organised by local people when children and adults everywhere celebrate the child's right to play.

Several makers from the studios in West Kilbride took part in this year's event at Ardrossan Beach which was organised by North Ayrshire Council and co-ordinated by Marcelle Park, Children"s Services Officer.

The event at Ardrossan had the theme "Fit for Play" and a wide range of fun things were organised. Kids fitness sessions, hip hop dance, arts & crafts and balloon modelling as well as a caricaturist were all on offer.

Nicola Beattie, Cadelabra; Virgil Bauzys, Hastingwood Basket Works and Marion E. Kane, Silversmith were assisted by Maggie Broadley, Craft & Design Development Officer.

Open for business from 12 pm until 4pm, each of the makers were kept constantly busy by the regular stream of children who wanted to try candle painting, basketweaving and jewellery making for themselves. Everyone left at the end of their 20 minute workshop session with their very own piece of craftwork - the standard was very high with everyone working extremely well.

Congratulations to all involved!!
